At what point did cartoon dogs stop communicating in thought bubbles and switch to direct speech?
I mean in mixed human-animal company, of course. When by themselves dogs have always talked out loud, and but it seems to be a relatively recent trend where sassy dogs and cats talk back to their owners in standard word balloons. I guess its called the Darby-effect.

Another example is Grimm in "Mother Goose & Grimm". Actually, in early years, Grimm only spoke in "thought bubbles", but for some reason, in more current strips, he's directly talking now.
It's evolution, my friend. It seems the comics page is subtly bucking the anti-evolution crowd by switching from though balloons to direct speech.
Pretty soon, all the dogs on the comics page will acquire opposable thumbs. Just wait and see.
