Awkward Overboard
Four silent penultimate panels for this Monday
Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau
On the Fastrack by Bill Holbrook
Momma by Mel Lazarus
Overboard by Chip Dunham
By my own rules, Overboard probably should not appear here.
The third panel is a reveal that is necessary for the gag. But the strip is so awkwardly paced, and the gag is so forced and unnatural, it deserves to be on the watch anyway.

The Doonesbury panel also demonstrates another growing and rather superfluous trend in the comics: silhouttes. The real offender in this class is For Better or for Worse, but Doonesbury is doing a lot of it, too. The main offenders seem to be art heavy strips that are routinely colorized, so maybe this is a way of cutting colorist expenses. Keep your eyes open.
But Doonesbury's been doing that for years now. Ever since Trudeau's hiatus - when was that, 1987?
I think if you look back through the archives, just about every time Doonesbury has appeared, it's been with a silhouette. Interesting.
