I saw an extremely rare SPP yesterday in one of my personal favorite strips, Zippy the Pinhead. http://zippythepinhead.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/2006/images/110306.gif I really hope that was a real sign.
It's unusual to see silent panels in that strip at all, and virtually never for a pause effect. In fact I did a quick check, and as far as I can tell the last time Bill Griffith used a true SPP was back in Feb 2005- http://zippythepinhead.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/sundays/images/022705.gif which is also a pretty good critique on the device.
